Uganda U-20 Lose 3-2 to Sudan

Uganda U-20 have lost 3-2 to Sudan in the CECAFA U-20 qualifiers semi-final, ending the Hippos’ hopes of reaching the final and qualifying for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The defeat ended Uganda’s hopes of reaching the final and securing qualification for the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations through the CECAFA tournament.

The two sides met at Uhuru Stadium on Tuesday, September 22, just days after Uganda defeated Sudan 1-0 in the group stage.

Uganda had entered the semi-final with a perfect record. Laryea Kingston’s side had beaten Djibouti 4-1 before edging Sudan 1-0 to finish top of Group B with six points.

Sudan Reach the Final

Sudan produced a different performance in the second meeting and secured a 3-2 victory to book their place in the tournament final.

The result represents a major turnaround after Uganda had beaten them in the final Group B match only a few days earlier.

Uganda had looked to continue their strong run in Tanzania after opening the competition with a convincing win over Djibouti. Isma Magala scored twice in that match, while Genesis Ocen Odiya and captain Richard Okello also found the net.

Amour Munogera had then scored the winning goal against Sudan in Uganda’s final group match.

Uganda U-20 Miss Out on AFCON Qualification

The defeat is a major setback for Uganda because the two finalists from the CECAFA qualifiers automatically qualify for the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.

By reaching the final, Sudan have therefore secured their place at the continental tournament.

Uganda, meanwhile, will not be among the two CECAFA teams automatically qualifying through this competition.

The Hippos had been one of the standout teams during the group stage, scoring five goals and conceding only once across their two matches. Their semi-final defeat means that strong group-stage form ultimately does not lead to a place in the final.

Another Test for Uganda’s Young Players

The loss ends Uganda’s immediate route to the 2027 U-20 AFCON through the CECAFA qualifiers.

For Kingston’s young squad, the tournament had provided valuable competitive experience. Uganda’s opening 4-1 victory over Djibouti and 1-0 group-stage win against Sudan had raised expectations before the semi-final.

Sudan will now move on to the final, while the remaining semi-final between hosts Tanzania and Burundi will determine the other finalist.

The Uganda U-20 side will now reflect on a campaign that ended with a narrow semi-final defeat to Sudan.

The CECAFA U-20 qualifiers are scheduled to conclude on September 24 in Dar es Salaam.
