Mobile Money Payments Introduced for Kampala–Entebbe Expressway Tolls

Motorists using the Kampala–Entebbe Expressway can now pay toll charges through mobile money, introducing a new cashless payment option at designated toll lanes.

The Ministry of Works and Transport announced the service on September 25, 2026. Drivers using the system are directed to lanes 4 and 5, where a toll agent requests the driver’s mobile number. A payment prompt is then sent to the phone, and the motorist approves the transaction using their mobile-money PIN.

The payment service is available across mobile networks, according to the published guidance. The new arrangement means motorists do not have to rely on a toll card before reaching the toll gate. Instead, they can make the payment directly from their mobile-money account.

Drivers are advised to make sure they have sufficient funds before joining the designated lanes and to keep their phones available so that they can approve the transaction when the payment prompt arrives.

The amount paid depends on the class of vehicle. Published rates include Shs3,000 for eligible motorcycles, Shs5,000 for light vehicles and up to Shs18,000 for large goods vehicles. The different rates are intended to reflect vehicle categories using the expressway.

The introduction of mobile-money payments is significant because mobile financial services are widely used in Uganda for everyday transactions. Allowing toll payments through an existing payment system gives motorists another option at the expressway and may make the payment process more convenient for people who do not use toll cards.

The system also changes the way motorists interact with toll lanes. Instead of handing over cash or presenting a pre-funded card, the driver provides a phone number and confirms the amount through the mobile-money prompt.

Motorists who experience difficulties with the service can seek assistance through the expressway’s published customer-support channels. The payment notice gives a toll-free telephone number and a WhatsApp contact for inquiries.

Drivers should still follow normal toll-gate procedures and use only the designated lanes when they want to make a mobile-money payment. They should also verify the payment amount displayed on the phone before entering their PIN.

The Kampala–Entebbe Expressway is an important transport link between Kampala, Entebbe and surrounding areas, including access to Entebbe International Airport. Changes to toll collection therefore affect commuters, commercial drivers, visitors and businesses that regularly use the road.

The new payment method is part of the continuing development of digital payment services in Uganda. For motorists, its immediate benefit is the ability to complete the toll transaction using a mobile phone without first loading a toll card.

The rollout will also provide an opportunity for authorities and road users to assess how efficiently the system operates during busy periods. As more motorists learn how to use the service, traffic at the designated lanes will help show whether the mobile-money option speeds up or changes the toll-payment process.

For now, motorists intending to use mobile money should follow the official instructions: enter lane 4 or 5, provide the registered mobile number, review the payment prompt and approve it with the correct PIN.
