2026 Nobel Prize in Physics Awarded to Francis Halzen for IceCube Neutrino Breakthrough

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Belgian-American physicist Francis Halzen for his decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.

Halzen, 82, received the award as the sole laureate, taking home the full prize sum of 12 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1.2 million).

A New Kind of Astronomy

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, located at the South Pole in Antarctica, is the world’s largest neutrino detector, buried deep in the ice sheet . The facility, led by the University of Wisconsin–Madison, was designed to capture neutrinos—elusive subatomic particles often described as “ghostly messengers from space” . These particles travel vast cosmic distances without being deflected by magnetic fields or absorbed by interstellar matter, offering scientists a unique window into the most violent events in the universe, such as supernovae, black holes, and gamma-ray bursts .

Mark Pearce, chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics, praised Halzen’s leadership:

“Francis Halzen has led an international team of researchers and engineers who have provided us with a fantastic instrument. His tenacity and scientific vision has paved the way for a new kind of astronomy”.

A Career Built on Neutrinos

Halzen’s research into capturing neutrinos at the South Pole dates back to the 1980s, when he first proposed the idea of using Antarctic ice as a detection medium . His work ultimately led to the construction and operation of IceCube, which began collecting data in 2010 and made its landmark discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos in 2013. Born in Belgium, Halzen is now affiliated with the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the United States .

Speaking to the Nobel committee by phone from Italy shortly after the announcement, Halzen expressed genuine surprise. “It was a great surprise and I obviously didn’t expect it” . He joked about being busy with a proposal and hoped the award would help get it approved.

The 2026 Nobel Season

The physics prize is the second of the 2026 Nobel awards to be announced. The medicine prize was awarded on Monday to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel for their work on optogenetics . The chemistry prize will be announced on Wednesday, October 7, followed by literature on Thursday, the peace prize on Friday, and the economics prize on Monday, October 12 .
