The Government of Uganda has indefinitely suspended all school trips and educational excursions across the country following a devastating bus accident in Kapchorwa District that claimed 20 pupils and one adult.
The decision was announced by the Ministry of Health and Sports as authorities seek to strengthen safety measures for learners travelling on school-related activities.
The tragic accident has plunged the nation into mourning, with parents, teachers, and community leaders expressing shock over one of the deadliest school transport accidents in recent years. The Government officials have extended condolences to the bereaved families while assuring the public that investigations are being conducted to establish the exact cause of the crash.
Education Ministry orders Nationwide Suspension.
According to the Ministry of Education and Sports, all schools should have been instructed to suspend educational tours, study trips, and other off-campus activities until a comprehensive review of school transport safety is completed. Officials say the move is intended to prevent similar tragedies while new safety guidelines are developed.
The ministry also urged school administrators to prioritize learner safety by ensuring that vehicles used for transporting students meet the required roadworthiness requirements and that drivers are properly qualified and comply with traffic regulations.
Investigations Underway
Police and road safety experts have launched investigations into the Kapchorwa crash to determine whether mechanical failure, speeding, poor road conditions, or human error contributed to the crash. Authorities have pledged to release full report once they are done with the investigations.
Road safety advocates have called for stricter enforcement of transport regulations for school vehicles, arguing that stronger inspections and regular driver training could help reduce accidents.
