A tragic road accident in Kalungu District has claimed the lives of at least 14 people after a commuter taxi collided head-on with a sand-laden truck along one of the country’s busiest highways.
The crash occurred at Kamuwunga Trading Centre in Lwera Swamp, Kalungu District, when a speeding Sino truck registration number UBS 040F heading to Kampala collided head-on with a commuter taxi registration UA 662AQ heading to Masaka.
According to preliminary police reports, the crash occurred during the early morning hours, leaving the taxi severely damaged and trapping several passengers inside the wreckage.
Emergency responders, police officers, and residents rushed to the scene to rescue survivors, while the injured were transported to nearby health facilities for emergency treatment.
Authorities confirmed that several victims died instantly, while others succumbed to their injuries before reaching hospital.
Police have launched a full investigation into the case to establish the exact cause of the accident. Initial findings suggest that over speeding dangerous overtaking, or poor mechanical conditions may have contributed to the collision, although investigators are yet to issue a final report.
The driver of the truck reportedly fled the scene and is being sought by law enforcement. The accident has once again renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations, particularly along major highways where fatal crashes continue to claim hundreds of lives every year.
Road safety advocates have urged motorists to observe speed limits, avoid reckless driving, and ensure their vehicles are worth being on the roads before them travelling.
The Police still says that the drivers who use roads should ensure that they follow the required qualifications to ensure that the deaths of people and the injured people is reduced. This can only be done by them following the road safety rules and regulations.
