Everything To Know About Apple’s Upcoming iPhone Foldable Phone

For years Apple has watched from the sidelines as Samsung, Google and Oneplus turned foldable smartphones into a mature, premium market. However the tech giant is finally ready to bend. Rumours and supply chain data indicate that Apple is deviating from it’s traditional release template to debut it’s first ever-touch-foldable smartphone.

While tech circles initially dubbed the project the “iPhone Fold”, top analysis report that Apple is leaning towards branding the device as iPhone Ultra.

Rather tha standardizing it as an iterative entry, Apple positions the foldable as a luxury tier above it’s flagship Pro Max lineup. Structurally, it is expected to utilize a ” book style” folding layout rather than a clamshell flip design.

  • Closed State: A passport sized 5.5 inch outer cover screen with a wider 4:3 aspect ratio.
  • Open State: A flexible iPad mini-like 7.8 inch inner display.

Key Hardware: No Crease, No Face ID

According to display analyst Ross Young and supply chain leakers, Apple has chased a near-invisible crease “regardless of cost”. The device will use a highly specialised ultra-thin glass manufactured by Chinese supplier Lens Technology, structured with a liquid metal and titanium hinge to guarantee a flat profile when completely unfolded.

The Return Of Touch ID : Because the chassis is too thin to house the intricate depth-sensors required for face ID. Apple is moving backward to look forward. The foldable will require a physical touch ID sensor integrated directly into the power button, mirroring the design of modern ipads.

The internal engine will be driven by TSMC’s bleeding-edge 2-nanometer A20 processor paired with 128GB of RAM to comfortably manage heavy multi-window multitasking and Apple intelligence processing. Camera-wise, space limitations mean no telephoto lens; it will sport dual 48MP wide and ultrawide lenses.

Release Date and Apple’s Split Timeline

The iPhone Ultra is on track to be announced at Apple’s flagship Cupertino event in the second week of September 2026. While the Pro phones will shift immediately in mid-September, supply chain delays regarding the intricate hinge mechanism mean mass market availability for the Ultra could tier out slightly into October or November.

Notably this launch is rumoured to mark a corporate historic transition: the September event is widely tipped to the first under John Ternus, who is expected to expected to succeed Tim Cook as Apple CEO.

Market Prices

Consumers hoping for a reasonably priced foldable will be disappointed. Analysis at research firm IDC, alongside supply chain tracking from Ming-Chi Kuo, indicate that the iPhone Ultra will easily be the most expensive phone Apple has ever sold.

  • 256GB Base model : Estimated $2,000 to $2,300
  • 1TB premium model : Tipped to climb as $2,900

Industry analysis views this as a high stakes play. While early adopters and tech enthusiasts will celebrate a truly new Apple form factor, mainstream commentators warn that a price tag touching $2,500 means the concurrent iPhone 18 Pro max, even with it’s standard slab design will remain the pragmatic volume driver for most premium buyers.

Apple’s bet isn’t that everyone will buy an Ultra, it’s a statement of engineering intent, letting the world know they can still rewrite the rules of mobile hardware.
