Uganda football is mourning the sudden death of David Owori, captain of Sports Club Villa, wo died after suffering severe injuries in a violent attack in Kampala.
Owori was attacked on Tuesday night, August 4, near his home in Dubai zone area of Makindye, after returning from an SC Villa training session. Reports indicate that he was attacked by suspected assailants only a short distance from his residence.
According to police reports cited by Reuters, Owori was found unconscious by passers-by after the assault. He was rushed for medical attention but later succumbed to injuries he sustained during the attack.
Several reports say the incident is believed to have been connected to an attempted robbery. The attackers reportedly targeted his personal belongings, with witnesses saying paving stones(paver) were used during the assault.
However, police investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible. David Owori was one of the key figures at SC Villa and served as captain of the historic Ugandan club.
He first joined SC Villa in 2018 before later moving abroad. His career included a spell with Velez CF in Spain and Utsiktens BK in Sweden before he returned to SC Villa in 2023.
Owori subsequently became an important member of the team that helped the club return to the top of Ugandan football.
His leadership and versatility made him an important player, capable of operating in midfield and defense.
Owori began developing his football career through youth academies in Kampala before joining Vipers SC in 2016. He later moved to SC Villa, where he established himself as a dependable player. His performance eventually earned him opportunities to play outside Uganda, his time in Spain and Sweden included.
News of David’s death has triggered an outpouring of grief across Uganda. SC Villa confirmed the death of their captain, while football supporters, fellow players and officials have paid tribute to a player remembered for his leadership and commitment to the game.
A requiem mass was held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Nsambya, where mourners gathered to pay their final respect. Uganda’s Parliament also observed a moment of silence in his memory, reflecting the national impact of his death.
The National Council of Sports has called for justice and stronger measures to protect athletes and members of the public, while leaders and football officials have urged security agencies to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
David Owori will be remembered as an SC Villa captain, a versatile footballer and a figure who represented Uganda’s football community both home and abroad. May His Soul Rest In Peace.
