Tottenham Hotspur’s disappointing Premier League campaign continued on Saturday, September 19, after they suffered a 3–2 home defeat to Aston Villa.
Despite spending approximately $400 million during the summer transfer window, Tottenham remain without a league victory after five matches. The club has collected only two points from two draws and three defeats, leaving them in the relegation zone.
The latest defeat has increased pressure on manager Roberto De Zerbi, whose team has struggled to deliver consistent performances since the beginning of the season.
Aston Villa Take the Lead

Aston Villa opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time when Johan Manzambi found the net, giving the visitors a 1–0 advantage before halftime.
Tottenham attempted to respond after the break, but Villa continued to create dangerous opportunities. Nicolas Jackson doubled Villa’s lead in the 67th minute before Emiliano Buendía added a third goal in the 79th minute.
The visitors appeared to be in complete control, putting Tottenham under further pressure in front of their home supporters.
Tottenham eventually found a response through Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke, who scored late goals to give the hosts hope of completing a comeback. However, Villa held on to secure all three points.
Mohammed Kudus also had a goal ruled out for offside, while Pedro Porro was forced off with an injury during the first half. The full extent of Porro’s injury was not immediately confirmed.
Pressure Increases on De Zerbi

The result adds to Tottenham’s difficult run, following their recent League Cup defeat to Liverpool.
The club had invested heavily in new players during the summer, raising expectations that the team could improve after finishing 17th in the Premier League in each of the previous two seasons.
However, the results have not matched the level of investment. Tottenham have struggled to defend effectively, create consistent attacking opportunities and maintain control during important moments.
De Zerbi now faces the challenge of improving the team’s performances and results before the situation becomes more difficult. Supporters will expect a strong reaction in the club’s upcoming fixtures.
Aston Villa Earn Their First League Win

For Aston Villa, the victory provided an important boost. It was their first Premier League win of the season under manager Unai Emery.
The three points moved Villa to 15th place with four points, while Tottenham remained in the relegation zone with two points.
Villa showed determination and took advantage of Tottenham’s defensive weaknesses throughout the match. Their ability to maintain their lead despite Tottenham’s late comeback attempt secured a valuable away victory.
Tottenham must now focus on recovering quickly. With significant summer spending and high expectations surrounding the team, further poor results could increase questions about the club’s direction and De Zerbi’s future.
