-Uganda is considering introducing an electronic monitoring system for public service vehicle (PSV) drivers as authorities seek new ways to reduce road accidents and improve safety on the country’s roads.
The proposal, discussed by the Ministry of Works and Transport, would introduce an electronic clocking-system to help monitor driver’s working hours and identify cases of fatigue.
Authorities believe that excessive working hours and driver exhaustion are among the issues that can contribute to dangerous driving and road crashes.
The proposed system could also strengthen the accountability within the public transport sector by creating a clearer record of when drivers begin and end their shifts.
This would help authorities identify operators who may be violating safety regulations and encourage transport companies to adopt better working practices.
The proposal comes amid growing concern over road safety in Uganda, particularly following several deadly crashes in recent weeks.
Parliament and government agencies are increasingly calling for stronger enforcement, better monitoring of drivers and improved safety standards across the transport industry.
However, the success of the proposed system will depend on effective implementation, proper enforcement and the availability of reliable technology. Stakeholders will also need to address questions surrounding the cost of installing and maintaining the monitoring equipment, mostly for small transport operators.
Road safety advocates have continued to call for a comprehensive approach that combines technology with regular vehicle inspections, responsible driving, better roads and strict punishment for the traffic offenders. They argue that electronic monitoring should complement-not replace-existing safety measures.
