2026 MTV VMAs: Madonna Dominates with Seven Wins as Taylor Swift Makes History and Nirvana Reunites

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards took place on Sunday, September 27, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with Madonna delivering a career-defining comeback, Taylor Swift becoming the most-awarded artist in VMAs history, and Nirvana’s surviving members reuniting on stage for the first time in decades.

Hosted by Snoop Dogg, the ceremony aired live on CBS and MTV, marking the first time the VMAs had been held in the Los Angeles area since 2017 . The show ran approximately 20 minutes behind schedule due to an NFL game between the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys, but the delay did little to dampen the evening’s momentum.

Madonna’s Historic Return

Madonna entered the night with 13 nominations—her highest tally in 28 years—and left with seven wins, including the coveted Artist of the Year award. Her opening performance marked her first time on the VMA stage in 23 years, since the infamous 2003 kiss with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera . She performed a medley from her album Confessions II, joined first by Sabrina Carpenter for “Bring Your Love,” then by Charli XCX for “Danceteria Afterhours,” with cameos from Debi Mazar, Julia Garner, Sombr, and Seth Rogen . Accepting Artist of the Year, Madonna reflected on her first VMAs performance in 1984:

“Most of you were probably not born, but I performed at the first MTV awards 43 years ago.”

She also recalled being told her career was over after a wardrobe malfunction during that performance:

“My heel broke, I fell to the stage trying to look cute and sexy, and my butt came out. Back then, butts were not in. I went backstage feeling proud, and my manager told me my career was over.”

Taylor Swift Breaks Records and Honors Dolly Parton

Taylor Swift began the night tied with Beyoncé at 30 VMA wins apiece. By accepting the inaugural Artist Director Honors—a new award recognizing artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video—she became the most-awarded artist in VMAs history with 31 Moon Person trophies . She also won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia” and Best Direction for “Opalite” . In her Video of the Year acceptance speech, Swift dedicated the award to the late Dolly Parton, who died in August at age 80:

“The ultimate showgirl. Without her, none of this would have happened.”

She also premiered the music video for her new single “Patient Zero,” which she directed and which stars Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson.

Tributes, Reunions, and Full Winners

The evening featured several emotional tributes. Kacey Musgraves performed “I Will Always Love You” in honor of Dolly Parton, with video clips of Parton interspersed throughout . Raye, Sombr, and Teddy Swims delivered a tribute to George Michael, celebrating 40 years since the release of his album Faith. The most anticipated moment came when Nirvana’s surviving members—Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear—reunited to accept the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, presented by Public Enemy’s Chuck D. It was their first VMAs appearance together since 1994 . Novoselic told the audience:

“Nirvana continues to resonate so deeply because people still crave authenticity.”
