England have returned to the top of the T20 international rankings after completing a 3–0 series sweep over Sri Lanka with a convincing eight-wicket victory in Manchester on Saturday, September 19, 2026.
The hosts chased down Sri Lanka’s total of 124 in just 9.4 overs, reaching 126–2 with 62 balls remaining. The victory moved England above India in the world rankings and extended their winning run against Sri Lanka in the T20 format to 15 consecutive matches.
Sri Lanka Struggle with the Bat

After winning the toss, England chose to bowl first at Emirates Old Trafford.
Sri Lanka struggled to build a competitive total and were bowled out for 124 with seven balls remaining in their innings. Opening batter Pathum Nissanka top-scored with 36 runs from 24 deliveries, while Kamindu Mendis contributed 35 from 28 balls.
England’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout the innings. Sonny Baker, Jofra Archer and Will Jacks each claimed two wickets, helping restrict Sri Lanka to their lowest total of the series.
Sri Lanka also suffered from poor discipline, conceding nine wides. Several dismissals, including avoidable run-outs, further weakened their innings.
Buttler Leads England’s Comfortable Chase

England lost opener Aneurin Donald for 13, but Jos Buttler and captain Harry Brook quickly took control of the chase.
Buttler produced an outstanding performance, scoring an unbeaten 62 runs from 32 balls. His innings included powerful hitting, and he sealed the victory with a six.
Brook supported him with 33 runs before being run out shortly before the end of the match. The pair shared an 85-run partnership that helped England complete the chase in less than 10 overs.
The result continued England’s impressive form in the shortest international format. The team has now won 23 of its last 26 T20 internationals.
England Return to the Top of the Rankings
England’s victory allowed them to reclaim the No. 1 position in the T20 international rankings, replacing India.
The two teams have exchanged the top position three times in the past two months, highlighting the competitive nature of the format.
Harry Brook was named Player of the Series after an impressive campaign. He scored an unbeaten 114 in the opening match and contributed consistently throughout the three-game series.
England won the first T20 match in Southampton by 119 runs before securing a six-wicket victory in Cardiff. Their final win in Manchester completed a dominant whitewash.
Sri Lanka Prepare for ODI Series
Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka described the series as disappointing and said the team needed to reassess its batting and bowling performances.
England and Sri Lanka will now turn their attention to a three-match One Day International series. The first ODI is scheduled to take place at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday, September 22.
England will hope to carry their strong T20 form into the longer limited-overs format, while Sri Lanka will look for a response after a difficult series.
