Raptors Sign Kawhi Leonard to $115 Million Extension

The Toronto Raptors have agreed to a two-year contract extension with Kawhi Leonard worth up to $115 million, according to reports on Tuesday.

The agreement includes a player option for the 2028-29 NBA season. Leonard is set to remain in Toronto after returning to the Raptors earlier this month in a trade from the Los Angeles Clippers.

Leonard Commits to Toronto

The extension gives the Raptors another major commitment from the two-time NBA champion, who previously helped the franchise win its first championship in 2019.

Leonard returned to Toronto in a blockbuster trade that sent Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick and several future draft picks to the Clippers. The trade was completed in September after being delayed by an NBA investigation into the Clippers.

The new extension will follow the final season of Leonard’s current contract. He is scheduled to earn just over $50 million during the 2026-27 season.

Leonard, 35, is coming off one of the strongest scoring seasons of his career. He averaged 27.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 65 games for the Clippers last season. He was also selected to the All-NBA Second Team.

Raptors Continue Building Around Leonard

Toronto’s decision to extend Leonard comes as the team looks to build around a mix of experienced and young players.

Leonard joins Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley as key pieces of the Raptors’ roster under head coach Darko Rajakovic.

The Raptors are hoping Leonard’s experience and production can help the team compete at a higher level after losing in the first round of last season’s playoffs.

Leonard’s previous spell in Toronto lasted only one season, but it ended with the biggest achievement in franchise history. He led the Raptors past the Golden State Warriors in the 2019 NBA Finals and was named Finals MVP.

Kawhi Leonard’s Return to the Raptors

Leonard’s return to Toronto has been one of the biggest NBA storylines of the offseason.

The Raptors initially agreed to acquire him from the Clippers in June, but the deal was delayed while the NBA investigated whether the Clippers had violated salary-cap rules in their dealings with Leonard.

The NBA later punished the Clippers with a $30 million fine and the loss of five first-round draft picks. Leonard was fined $700,000 but was not suspended.

With the trade now completed and the extension agreed, Leonard is set to continue his second chapter with the Raptors.

The two-year deal could keep him in Toronto through the 2028-29 season, although the final year is under his control through the player option.
